Sometimes the decision to prune or remove a tree is pretty straight forward. For instance, a mature oak in good condition and in a good location that has a few normal dead branches that would benefit from being pruned should probably be done (when dormant only to avoid oak wilt disease). A large decayed tree that has been dead for several years and leans over a house should definitely be removed very soon. However most times, the trees look like something in between the two extreme examples and need a reliable consulting arborist to evaluate and make an unbiased decision and a plan of action.
